OstprignitzRuppin

Ostprignitz–Ruppin is a district (Landkreis) in the northwestern part of the German state of Brandenburg. It covers an area of roughly 1,413 square kilometres, making it one of the larger districts in the state. The district seat is the town of Friesack, while the larger towns of Perleberg, Zernikow, and Schwedt lie within its borders. The district is bordered by the district of Uckermark to the north, Potsdam-Mittelmark to the east, Oberspreewald-Lausitz to the south, and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the west.

The region is dominated by lowland terrain interspersed with agricultural fields and numerous lakes, most notably the deep eutrophic lake of Ostsee. The Havel and Elbe rivers form natural boundaries on the south and east, respectively, and provide important inland waterways. The western flank of the district is part of the natural landscape of the Wusterhausen–Neulendorf Biosphere Reserve. Ostprignitz‑Ruppin is considered a typical rural Brandenburg area, with an economy largely based on agriculture, forestry, and increasingly, tourism focused on its natural attractions and historic towns. It is served by the A15 motorway and a network of regional rail lines, including the Berlin–Bremen and VBB network. The district is part of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region and collaborates with neighbouring districts on economic and environmental initiatives.
