Ossian refers to a legendary Gaelic bard and to the body of epic poetry attributed to him in the 18th century. The Ossianic cycle centers on Fingal, Ossian, and other heroes in a mythic past of ancient Scotland and Ireland. The figure of Ossian was popularized through translations and publications that claimed to render ancient Gaelic poetry into English.
