Osoji

Osoji is a Japanese tradition celebrated on the last day of the year, December 31st. The term "Osoji" literally translates to "big cleaning." It is a thorough and extensive cleaning of the home and workplace, symbolizing the shedding of the old year's burdens and preparing for a fresh start in the new year.

The practice of Osoji is rooted in Shinto and Buddhist beliefs, emphasizing purification and renewal. It is believed that by cleaning away the dust and clutter, one can invite good fortune and ward off evil spirits for the coming year. This cleaning is not just a superficial tidying up; it involves meticulous attention to detail, often including cleaning every nook and cranny, washing tatami mats, and organizing storage spaces.
