Osakkuuteen is a Finnish term that translates to something akin to "stockholm syndrome" or a psychological response characterized by a captive developing a bond with their captor. While not officially recognized as a distinct psychological disorder in diagnostic manuals, the concept describes a complex set of behaviors and emotions that can emerge in situations of prolonged captivity, abuse, or oppression. Individuals experiencing osakkuuteen may develop positive feelings, admiration, or even loyalty towards the person or entity that is causing them harm.

This phenomenon is often explained as a survival mechanism. In a situation where escape is impossible and the captor holds all the power, aligning with the captor's perceived needs or desires can be perceived by the victim as a way to increase their chances of survival. This can involve downplaying the abuse, rationalizing the captor's actions, or even identifying with their worldview. Over time, these coping strategies can become deeply ingrained, leading to a genuine emotional attachment.
