Ortostattinen refers to something related to or occurring when standing upright. In a medical context, it commonly relates to orthostatic hypotension, a condition where blood pressure drops significantly upon standing. This drop can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, and in severe cases, fainting. It is a common issue, particularly in older adults and can be caused by various factors including dehydration, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions affecting the autonomic nervous system, which regulates blood pressure.

The physiological response to standing involves gravity pulling blood towards the lower extremities. Normally, the body compensates by constricting blood vessels and increasing heart rate to maintain blood flow to the brain. Diagnosis typically involves measuring blood pressure while lying down and then again after standing for a few minutes.
