Orkynni

Orkynni is a genus of extinct cephalopods belonging to the order Nautilida. These fascinating marine creatures lived during the Devonian period, approximately 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago. Fossils of Orkynni have been found in various locations, providing valuable insights into ancient marine ecosystems.

The defining characteristic of Orkynni, like other nautiloids, is its external, chambered shell. This shell, typically coiled, served as a protective housing and likely aided in buoyancy control. The animal itself lived in the outermost chamber, while the inner chambers were filled with gas or liquid, allowing it to adjust its position in the water column. Orkynni possessed a relatively simple anatomy compared to modern cephalopods, featuring a ring of tentacles surrounding its mouth for capturing prey.
