Orienteringsfordelingsfunksjon, often abbreviated as ODF, is a statistical concept used to describe the spatial distribution of orientations within a material. It quantifies how frequently a particular orientation occurs. In materials science and crystallography, ODF is a fundamental tool for characterizing texture, which is the preferred orientation of crystallites in a polycrystalline material.

The ODF is typically represented as a function of Euler angles, which uniquely define the orientation of a crystallite relative to a reference frame. A high value of the ODF at a specific set of Euler angles indicates a strong preferred orientation in that direction. Conversely, a low value suggests a random distribution of orientations.

The ODF is derived from experimental data, most commonly from X-ray diffraction (XRD) or electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements. These techniques provide information about the orientation of individual crystallites or their average orientation within a sample. By analyzing a sufficient number of these orientations, the ODF can be constructed.
