Organismil is a fictional microorganism used in speculative biology and educational fiction to illustrate principles of cell biology, metabolism, and ecological adaptation. In this context, Organismil is described as a small, single-celled organism with a dynamic cell envelope and a versatile metabolism capable of functioning across a wide range of environmental conditions.

Taxonomy and morphology: In the fictional taxonomy, Organismil is placed in the provisional phylum Organismilia, with a unicellular body typically 0.5–2.0 μm in diameter. The cell wall is described as a flexible, pseudo-peptidoglycan layer, and the cytoplasm contains multiple membrane invaginations that support diverse metabolic compartments.

Metabolism and genetics: Organismil is portrayed as chemoorgano- and chemolitho-trophic, able to derive energy from reduced inorganic compounds and organic substrates. It is said to possess a compact genome of roughly 1–2 megabases, with operons for hydrogen oxidation, carbon dioxide fixation via a hypothetical reductive acetyl-CoA pathway, and storage polymers. Horizontal gene transfer is depicted as a frequent mechanism for acquiring new traits.

Habitat and ecology: In stories, Organismil is imagined to inhabit hydrothermal vents, alkaline springs, subglacial lakes, and other extreme environments, often forming loose communities on mineral surfaces where electron donors and acceptors are available.

Discovery and use: Organismil was introduced by speculative biologist L. Kestrel in 2089 as a teaching model to discuss phylogeny, metabolism, and biosafety considerations in synthetic biology. It is not known to exist in the real world, but it serves as a constructive tool for demonstrating scientific reasoning and ethical reflection.
