Oranmiyan

Oranmiyan, also known as Oranyan, is a prominent figure in Yoruba origin stories and is regarded as a legendary prince, son of Oduduwa. He occupies a central place in Yoruba history as a founder figure associated with the early expansion and consolidation of political power among the Yoruba people.

In Yoruba tradition, Oranmiyan is widely credited with founding the Oyo Empire and is often described as the first Alaafin (king) of Oyo. According to these accounts, he led military campaigns and established Oyo as a major political center, contributing to the formation of a centralized Yoruba state. His acts are commonly linked to the early growth of Yoruba urban and state structures in the region surrounding Ife.

There are variant and sometimes conflicting traditions about Oranmiyan’s life. Some sources place his reign in the late medieval period and emphasize his role in expanding Yoruba influence from Ife into the forest and savanna. Other traditions associate him with voyages to the Niger region and, in some Edo or Benin narratives, with the founding or early leadership of cities in the Benin area. Because these stories are largely transmitted through oral history, precise details—such as dates and the scope of his rule—vary by lineage and region.
