Optotypebased refers to testing or assessment methods that use optotypes—standardized visual symbols such as letters, symbols, or Landolt rings—to measure visual acuity and related visual functions. The term highlights that the evaluation is driven by recognizable symbols rather than purely grating or other non-symbolic stimuli.

In practice, optotypebased tests are fundamental in ophthalmology, optometry, and pediatric vision screening. Common optotypes include Snellen letters, ETDRS letters, Lea symbols, HOTV, and Landolt C. Tests typically present optotypes at a specified distance (or near with a corresponding chart) and record the smallest optotype the person can identify, often expressed in logMAR units for precision and comparability. Crowded designs, where optotypes are surrounded by flanking shapes, are used to reduce spatial-uncertainty effects and better reflect real-world vision.

Applications include measuring distance visual acuity for refractive assessments, monitoring changes over time, screening for vision problems in children, and conducting research on visual performance. Advantages of optotypebased methods include standardization, repeatability, and broad clinical familiarity. Limitations can involve language dependence for letter charts, variations in chart design across manufacturers, and factors such as crowding, contrast sensitivity, and processing speed that can influence results.

With advances in digital technology, optotype libraries and automated testing platforms enhance accessibility, allow near- and distance-vision assessments, and support telemedicine and large-scale screening.
