Optimumfeuchte, or optimal moisture, denotes the moisture level at which a material or organism performs best, remains most stable, or stays viable. It is a cross-disciplinary concept used in agriculture, storage, construction, and materials science. The exact optimum is not universal; it depends on the type of material or species, as well as temperature, aeration, and external conditions. Moisture is typically described either as a moisture content (percent by mass) or as a relationship to ambient humidity.

In agriculture and horticulture, optimum soil moisture represents the balance between water availability for roots and sufficient air in the soil. It often approximates the soil’s field capacity, but precise values vary by plant. Under-watering leads to water stress and reduced growth, while over-watering can cause hypoxia and root diseases.

In seed technology, optimum moisture content supports seed longevity and germination. High moisture increases the risk of fungal growth and spoilage, whereas excessive drying can impair viability.

In wood, textiles, and other construction-related materials, optimum moisture content affects mechanical properties, dimensional stability, and durability. Each material and species has characteristic ranges; too much moisture can promote decay and swelling, while too little can cause cracking or loss of flexibility.

In food processing and biomass applications, optimum moisture influences texture, shelf life, fermentation, and energy balance, and is actively controlled during drying, curing, and storage.

Measurement approaches include gravimetric moisture content, equilibrium moisture content relative to ambient humidity, and various in situ sensors tailored to soil, grain, wood, or other materials.
