Ophryocystis
Ophryocystis is a genus of microsporidian parasites that infect insects, most notably the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus. The best described member of the genus is Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE), which has been studied as a prominent parasite affecting monarch health and migratory performance. As microsporidia, Ophryocystis species are obligate intracellular parasites that complete their life cycles within host tissues and produce infectious spores.
Transmission occurs when a host ingests or comes into contact with environmental spores shed by infected individuals.
Diagnosis and surveillance typically rely on detecting spore loads on the butterfly, often by examination of
Geographic distribution largely follows the range of monarchs in North America, with reports of related infections
