Ooni

Ooni is a title used for the traditional ruler of Ile Ife, a historic Yoruba city in southwestern Nigeria. The Ooni of Ife is regarded as a senior figure within Yoruba culture and politics, serving as a symbolic and ceremonial leader as well as a custodian of local customs and religious traditions. The role is associated with the succession of rulers who preside over important festivals, rituals, and regional diplomacy.

The Ooni’s position is typically filled through a traditional selection process involving elders and kingmakers within the Ife kingdom. The holder of the title is expected to uphold Yoruba cultural heritage, oversee rites at sacred sites, and act as a representative in intercommunity relations. The office has a long historical lineage and is one of the most prominent chieftaincies within Yorubaland.

As of 2015, the Ooni of Ife is Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, a figure who has engaged in various cultural and public initiatives while maintaining traditional duties. The Ooni’s influence extends beyond Ile Ife, often affecting cultural identity and Yoruba unity across regions.

Ooni is also the name of a modern company known for designing portable outdoor pizza ovens. Founded in 2012 under the name Uuni and rebranded as Ooni in 2016, the company markets compact ovens for consumer use and professional testing, with products available globally through online and retail channels. The brand focuses on ease of use, portability, and alternative fuel options such as wood or gas.
