Omnicron
Omnicron, often referred to as the Omicron variant, is a variant of the virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2. It was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from South Africa on November 24, 2021. The WHO designated it as a Variant of Concern on November 26, 2021, naming it Omicron, the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet. This designation was due to its significant number of mutations, particularly in the spike protein, which raised concerns about its transmissibility, immune evasion, and potential for increased severity.
