Ommandivormist is a term used in speculative biology and science fiction to describe a colony-based organism that achieves coordinated function through modular units rather than a single centralized brain. The name suggests command and form, reflecting its characteristic emergence of collective control from distributed parts.

Biology and structure

Ommandivormists consist of numerous autonomous modules, often called ommandoids, that can fuse, split, and rearrange to form different shapes. They rely on an emergent neural-like network created by chemical signaling and electrical cues dispersed across modules, enabling coordinated responses without a true brain. Physiology is modular and open-ended: energy acquisition can be based on photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, or scavenged nutrients, depending on the environment. Movement and growth arise from remodeling of an extracellular matrix and cytoplasmic exchange between modules, allowing rapid reconfiguration.

Ecology and lifecycle

In their imagined ecosystems, ommandivormists function as flexible detritivores or opportunistic predators, shaping their surroundings by expanding into available space and resources. They reproduce mainly through fragmentation, with fragments capable of regenerating into fully functional colonies.
