Olomouc

Olomouc is a city in the Czech Republic, located in the eastern part of Moravia on the Morava River. It serves as the administrative center of the Olomouc Region and has historically been the seat of Moravian ecclesiastical authority. The city has a population of about 100,000 residents.

Olomouc has a well-preserved historic center that reflects its medieval origins and later Baroque and Rococo influences. Notable sights include the Holy Trinity Column, a prominent Baroque monument on Horní náměstí that is recognized as a World Heritage Site, the City Hall with the Olomouc Astronomical Clock, and several churches such as St. Moritz Church (Kostel svatého Mořice) and the Cathedral of St. Wenceslas.

Education and research are central to the city. Palacký University Olomouc, established as the University of Olomouc in 1573 by Emperor Maximilian II, is a major historic and current center of higher education in Moravia, re-founded in 1946 as Palacký University Olomouc. The city hosts other higher education institutions and research organizations, contributing to a vibrant cultural scene with theatres, museums and galleries.

Olomouc is connected by rail and road to Prague, Brno and other cities, and has a local tram network and bus services. Its economy combines public administration, education, science and services. The city is also a regional cultural hub with events and festivals throughout the year.
