Okunikko

Okunikko is a mountainous area located in the northern part of Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning natural beauty, including alpine scenery, hot springs, and numerous hiking trails. The name "Okunikko" literally translates to "inner Nikko" or "deep Nikko," suggesting its remote and less accessible location compared to the more frequented areas of Nikko.

The region is famous for Lake Chuzenji, a picturesque caldera lake situated at an elevation of 1,269 meters. Nearby, Kegon Falls, one of Japan's most celebrated waterfalls, plunges 97 meters from the cliffs of Lake Chuzenji. Other significant natural attractions include Ryuzu Falls and Senjogahara Marshland, a vast alpine wetland offering boardwalks for easy exploration.

Okunikko is a year-round destination. In spring and summer, it is ideal for hiking, camping, and enjoying the fresh mountain air. Autumn transforms the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and yellow foliage, drawing visitors for spectacular leaf-peeping. During winter, the area becomes a destination for snow sports, with ski resorts like Gassan and Arai operating.

Access to Okunikko is primarily via the Irohazaka Winding Road, a famous and scenic mountain road with 48 hairpin turns. Public transportation, including buses from Nikko Station, is also available. The area is part of the larger Nikko National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, protecting its rich biodiversity and cultural significance. Okunikko offers a serene escape and a chance to experience the raw beauty of Japan's natural landscapes.
