Ohutlevyteräkset, also known as thin-layer chromatography (TLC), is a widely used analytical technique in chemistry and biochemistry. It involves the separation of mixtures by distributing the components between a stationary phase and a mobile phase. The stationary phase is typically a thin layer of silica gel or alumina coated onto a glass or plastic backing, while the mobile phase is a solvent or solvent mixture that moves up the plate by capillary action.

The sample to be analyzed is applied as a small spot near the bottom of the plate. As the mobile phase moves up the plate, it carries the sample components with it. The different components of the mixture travel at different rates due to their varying interactions with the stationary phase, resulting in distinct spots at the top of the plate. These spots can then be visualized under UV light or by staining with a suitable reagent.

TLC is a quick and inexpensive method for separating and identifying compounds. It is commonly used for quality control in pharmaceuticals, forensics, and environmental analysis. However, it has limitations, such as the difficulty in quantifying the separated components and the potential for overlapping spots, which can make interpretation challenging. Despite these limitations, TLC remains a valuable tool in analytical chemistry due to its simplicity and effectiveness.
