Ohjelmistomääräinen

Ohjelmistomääräinen, often translated as software-defined, refers to a paradigm shift in how computing systems and networks are managed and controlled. Instead of relying on dedicated hardware for specific functions, the control plane and functionalities are abstracted and managed through software. This allows for greater flexibility, agility, and automation.

In a software-defined environment, network functions that were traditionally implemented in hardware appliances, such as routers and firewalls, are virtualized and run as software on commodity servers. This separation of the control plane (which makes decisions about traffic flow) from the data plane (which forwards the traffic) is a key characteristic. The control plane can then be centrally managed by software, enabling dynamic configuration and real-time adjustments.

This approach offers numerous benefits. It reduces reliance on proprietary hardware, potentially lowering costs and increasing vendor choice. Automation becomes easier, streamlining complex tasks and reducing the likelihood of human error. Scalability is improved, as resources can be provisioned and de-provisioned on demand through software. Examples of software-defined technologies include Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Software-Defined Storage (SDS). These technologies are foundational to modern cloud computing and data center architectures, enabling the dynamic and efficient allocation of resources.
