Oheistila is a traditional Finnish wooden house style that originated in the coastal regions of southwestern Finland, particularly in the Åland Islands and the provinces of Satakunta and Uusimaa. The name "oheistila" translates roughly to "side-by-side house," referring to its distinctive construction method where the walls are built by placing vertical logs side by side without notching or interlocking them. This technique contrasts with more common Finnish log house styles, such as the *ruotsalainen* (Swedish-style) or *suomalainen* (Finnish-style) log cabins, which often feature interlocking corners.

The oheistila typically consists of a single-story structure with a steeply pitched roof, often made of shingles or thatch, to protect against harsh coastal weather. The walls are constructed from thick, straight logs, usually pine or spruce, which are laid horizontally in courses. The gaps between the logs are filled with moss, clay, or other insulating materials to improve thermal efficiency and weather resistance. This style was particularly well-suited to the maritime climate of its region, offering durability and insulation against wind, rain, and cold temperatures.

Oheistila houses were commonly used as fishing cottages, storage buildings, or small residences by coastal communities. Their simple yet sturdy design made them practical for the demands of rural and fishing life. Over time, the style declined in popularity as more modern construction methods and materials became available, though some examples still exist today as historical landmarks or restored heritage sites.
