OKT3

OKT3 is a brand name for muromonab-CD3, a mouse monoclonal antibody. It is a medication used to prevent organ rejection in patients who have received a transplanted organ, such as a kidney, heart, or liver. OKT3 targets the CD3 receptor, which is found on the surface of T lymphocytes. By binding to CD3, OKT3 effectively depletes T cells from the body. T cells play a crucial role in the immune response, and their depletion helps to suppress the immune system's attack on the transplanted organ.

The administration of OKT3 is typically done intravenously. Due to its mechanism of action, OKT3 can cause a significant immune response, known as cytokine release syndrome, especially during the initial doses. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, and muscle aches. Therefore, patients receiving OKT3 are closely monitored for these side effects and may be given premedications to mitigate them. OKT3 is generally used for a limited period to prevent acute rejection episodes. Its use has largely been superseded by newer immunosuppressive agents with better safety profiles and more targeted mechanisms, but it remains an important option in certain clinical situations.
