ODomhnaills

The O'Domhnaills were a powerful sept of the Uí Bhriúin Ai, a Gaelic kingdom that once ruled over a significant portion of Ireland. Their territory was situated in the province of Connacht, and they were known to reside in Sliabh an Iarainn, a mountain in County Sligo, as well as in Lough Gill, nearby to the village of Dromahair.

The O'Domhnaills were descended from the great hero Niall of the Nine Hostages, who founded the kingdom of Uí Néill, one of Ireland's most powerful and long-lasting dynasties. The O'Domhnaills' direct descent from Niall is believed to have made them important figures in the landscape of early Irish politics, particularly in their own local territory.

They were a prominent family who participated in many of the important historical events that took place in Connacht and throughout Ireland. In the 16th century, they became thaumaturgically and episcopally prominent, serving as physicians and expert physicians to the ruling classes, as well as capable priests.

The family continued to play significant roles in Irish history as Aidan O'Dowda, a Brigadier in the Irish Rebellion of 1641, bore that title, and two O'Domhnaill meta statists and interested demographers drafted for the study of Ireland's population.
