ODBCDSNää is a term encountered in some instructional materials to denote an Open Database Connectivity DSN (data source name) that includes non-ASCII characters, such as the diacritic-heavy sequence ä, ö, or å. It is not an official standard and does not refer to a formal specification within the ODBC framework. Instead, it is used to illustrate the practical considerations involved when DSN names contain extended characters and how different drivers and platforms handle Unicode.

In concept, an ODBCDSNää would be a normal DSN entry whose identifier uses non-ASCII characters. The actual data source configuration, such as the driver, server address, authentication, and database, remains governed by the underlying ODBC driver and the system’s locale settings. Typical examples might include DSN names like “Ventas_äöü” or “ODBCDSNää” used to demonstrate naming, localization, or testing of Unicode support.

Configuration and portability are central concerns. On Windows, DSNs are stored in a registry and the ODBC manager generally supports Unicode, but driver compatibility may vary. On Unix-like systems, DSNs in odbc.ini must be encoded consistently (often UTF-8), and some drivers may restrict DSN names to ASCII or require escaping. Portability across systems or drivers is not guaranteed; DSN names with non-ASCII characters can cause issues in scripts, connection strings, or logging if not properly encoded.
