Nýburagreining is an Icelandic term that translates to "newborn analysis" or "newborn assessment." It refers to the comprehensive medical evaluation performed on a baby shortly after birth. This assessment is crucial for identifying any immediate health concerns or potential developmental issues.

The process typically begins with the Apgar score, which is administered at one and five minutes after birth. This score evaluates the newborn's appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration, providing a quick overview of their physiological state. Following the Apgar score, a more thorough physical examination is conducted by a pediatrician or neonatologist. This includes checking vital signs, examining the head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, chest, abdomen, and limbs, as well as assessing reflexes and muscle tone.

Nýburagreining also involves screening for certain congenital conditions. This often includes metabolic screening, where a small blood sample is taken from the baby's heel to test for inherited disorders that can be treated if detected early. Hearing screening is also commonly performed. In some cases, depending on the circumstances of the birth or family history, further tests like echocardiograms or genetic testing might be recommended.
