Nøjigheden

Nøjigheden, also known as precision or accuracy in measurement, refers to the degree to which repeated measurements under unchanged conditions show the same results. It is a fundamental concept in metrology, the science of measurement, and plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and consistency of experimental and industrial processes.

In practical terms, nøjigheden indicates how close a series of measurements are to each other, regardless of whether they align with the true value. For example, if a scale consistently measures an object as 10.1 grams every time it is weighed, despite the actual weight being 10.0 grams, the scale demonstrates high nøjigheden but low *nøjagtighed* (accuracy). Conversely, if the scale measures the same object as 9.8, 10.3, and 10.7 grams in successive weighings, it lacks nøjigheden due to variability, even if the average result is close to the true value.

Nøjigheden is influenced by factors such as instrument design, environmental conditions, and human error. Improving nøjigheden often involves using high-quality equipment, calibrating instruments regularly, and minimizing external disturbances. Statistical methods, such as calculating the standard deviation or variance of repeated measurements, are commonly employed to quantify and assess nøjigheden.

For meaningful results, both nøjigheden and *nøjagtighed*—the closeness of measurements to the true value—must be considered.
