Nätverksbelastning, often referred to as network congestion, occurs when a network node or link is carrying so much data that its quality of service deteriorates. This can manifest as increased latency, packet loss, and reduced throughput. Essentially, the demand for network resources exceeds the available capacity.

Several factors can contribute to network congestion. A sudden surge in traffic, such as during a major online event or a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, can overwhelm network infrastructure. Insufficient bandwidth on a particular link or at a network device, like a router or switch, is another common cause. Overloaded servers that cannot process incoming requests fast enough can also create bottlenecks, leading to congestion further upstream in the network. Poorly designed network topologies or inefficient routing protocols can also exacerbate the problem by creating suboptimal paths for data.

The consequences of network congestion can be significant. For end-users, this means slow website loading times, choppy video calls, and unresponsive online applications.
