Näsdukar

Näsdukar are small square pieces of cloth carried in a pocket or bag and used for personal hygiene, primarily for blowing the nose, wiping the face or hands, and drying small spills. They are reusable and can also function as a fashion accessory when folded as a pocket square. In everyday use, they contrast with disposable tissues.

Most näsdukar are made from cotton or linen, and sometimes silk. Typical sizes range from about 20 to 45 centimeters per side. Edges are finished with a hem, sometimes with decorative edging, and many feature monograms, patterns, or prints. Materials and finishes vary with purpose, from practical everyday use to more decorative, collectible variants.

Historically, the handkerchief has a long presence in Europe and elsewhere, gaining prominence from the early modern period onward. Its use peaked before the widespread adoption of disposable tissues and has since become both a practical item and a fashion or etiquette accessory for some people. In Sweden and many other countries, näsdukar can be part of traditional dress or personal grooming, and monogrammed or patterned versions remain common among enthusiasts and in gift settings.

Care for näsdukar typically involves regular washing after use. Cotton and linen are durable and suitable for machine washing, while silk requires gentler handling. Ironing is common for a crisp appearance. To preserve color and fabric, sorting by material and following care labels is recommended.
