Näppäinkytkimet, often referred to as key switches, are the mechanical components found beneath the keycaps of most computer keyboards. They are responsible for registering a keypress and sending that signal to the computer. Different types of näppäinkytkimet exist, each offering a unique tactile and auditory experience.

The most common categories are membrane switches, mechanical switches, and optomechanical switches. Membrane switches are the most prevalent in budget keyboards. They utilize a rubber dome that collapses when pressed, completing a circuit on a printed circuit board. These switches are generally quiet and inexpensive but can feel mushy and lack durability.

Mechanical switches, on the other hand, are known for their distinct feel and sound. Each key has an individual switch mechanism, often featuring a spring and a stem. These switches come in various types, such as linear (smooth travel), tactile (a noticeable bump), and clicky (a bump and an audible click). They are prized by typists and gamers for their responsiveness, durability, and customization options, though they are typically more expensive and louder than membrane switches.

Optomechanical switches combine elements of both. They use a beam of light that is interrupted when the key is pressed. This method can offer faster actuation and greater durability than traditional mechanical switches, as there are fewer physical contact points to wear out. The choice of näppäinkytkimet significantly influences a keyboard's typing feel, sound, performance, and overall user experience.
