Nyungwe

Nyungwe is a vast tropical rainforest located in southwestern Rwanda. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved mountain rainforests in Africa. The forest is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, housing a significant number of endemic species.

The ecosystem of Nyungwe National Park is incredibly diverse, ranging from evergreen to montane forests. It is home to thirteen primate species, including chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and baboons. Birdwatchers are also drawn to Nyungwe, as it boasts over 300 species of birds, including many Albertine Rift endemics. The forest floor teems with life, featuring numerous butterfly species and a rich variety of orchids and other flora.

Nyungwe National Park was established in 2004 to protect this unique environment. Conservation efforts focus on preserving the forest's habitat and mitigating threats such as illegal logging and poaching. Ecotourism plays a crucial role in funding these efforts, with popular activities including chimpanzee trekking, canopy walks, and guided nature hikes. The forest's canopy walkway, suspended high above the forest floor, offers breathtaking views and a unique perspective on the rainforest's upper levels. Nyungwe is also a vital water catchment area, feeding into the Congo and Nile rivers.
