Nyugatdunántúli

Nyugatdunántúli, meaning "Western Transdanubia" in Hungarian, is one of the seven statistical regions of Hungary. It is located in the western part of the country, bordering Austria and Slovenia. The region is comprised of three counties: Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas, and Zala. Its administrative center is Győr.

The geography of Nyugatdunántúli is diverse, featuring rolling hills, fertile plains, and the southern end of the Little Hungarian Plain. The region is crossed by several rivers, including the Rába and the Zala, and also contains a portion of Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. The climate is generally temperate continental.

Historically, this area has been a crossroads of cultures due to its strategic location. Archaeological evidence suggests settlement dating back to prehistoric times. During the Roman era, it was part of Pannonia. Throughout the Middle Ages and into modern times, it experienced influences from various empires and neighboring regions.

The economy of Nyugatdunántúli is varied. Agriculture plays a significant role, with crops like corn, wheat, and sunflowers being cultivated. The region also has a developed industrial sector, particularly in automotive manufacturing and food processing. Tourism is an important economic driver, especially around Lake Balaton and the historical cities such as Sopron and Kőszeg, known for their well-preserved old towns and thermal baths. Transportation infrastructure is well-developed, with major highways and railway lines connecting the region to Budapest and international destinations.
