Nyrefunksjonstap, also known as kidney function loss or renal insufficiency, refers to a gradual decrease in the ability of the kidneys to perform their essential functions. These functions include filtering waste products and excess fluid from the blood, regulating blood pressure, maintaining electrolyte balance, and producing hormones crucial for red blood cell production and bone health. When kidney function declines, these substances can build up in the body, leading to various health problems.

The causes of nyrefunksjonstap are diverse. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most common underlying condition, often stemming from long-term diabetes and high blood pressure, which can damage the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys. Other causes include glomerulonephritis, a group of diseases affecting the kidney's filtering units, polycystic kidney disease, an inherited disorder, and recurrent kidney infections. Acute kidney injury (AKI), a sudden loss of kidney function, can also occur due to severe dehydration, certain medications, or blockages in the urinary tract.

Symptoms of nyrefunksjonstap may not appear until the condition is advanced. Early signs can be subtle and include fatigue, changes in urination frequency or appearance, swelling in the legs and feet, and loss of appetite. As kidney function deteriorates, more severe symptoms can emerge, such as nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and muscle cramps. Diagnosis typically involves blood and urine tests to assess kidney filtration rates and detect abnormalities. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause, slowing the progression of kidney damage, and addressing complications. In severe cases, dialysis or a kidney transplant may be necessary to sustain life.
