Nyloninzet

Nyloninzet is a term used in Dutch to describe the nylon insert used in certain locking nuts, commonly called nylon insert locknuts or nyloc nuts. The nylon insert is a molded polyamide segment inside the threaded bore of the nut that acts as a self-locking element.

When the nut is threaded onto a bolt, the bolt threads cut into the nylon insert, displacing the material and causing a friction fit that resists loosening due to vibration and dynamic loads. The nylon also provides a small amount of elastic recovery, helping to maintain clamping force over cycles. Standard nylon inserts are suited for a range of light to medium duty applications; performance can vary with temperature, load, and retention of the insert.

Materials and variants: The insert is usually a nylon polymer (often Nylon 6/6) molded into the nut. High-temperature versions exist using different polyamide formulations. The inserts can be molded integrally into the nut or inserted as a separate ring. The bolt and nut pair should have clean, correctly sized threads; overtightening or cross-threading reduces effectiveness.

Applications and limitations: Nyloninzet locknuts are widely used in automotive, machinery, and consumer electronics where vibration resistance is beneficial. They are not ideal for high-temperature environments, high-load or long-duration locking, or applications requiring frequent disassembly. Over time, repeated cycling or sustained load can reduce locking performance due to creep of the nylon.
