Nykyissä

Nykyissä, which translates to "nowadays" in Finnish, is a term used in Finland to describe the current modern era. The word often carries a sense of infamy and shame, conveyed by its verb form which carries an essentially negative connotation. Nykyisitys is one of the many terms in the Finnish language which have similarly pejorative connotations.

In everyday language, people in Finland frequently use "nykyissä" to describe a contemporary event or trend that they find unpleasant, immoral, or indicative of societal decay. The expression is often colloquial and can't be officially translated to English. It is sometimes necessitated to communicate to outsiders about certain contemporary issues in Finland, but its use should be approached with understanding of its connotations.

Nykyissä was heavily debated in the Finnish society, especially after it was cited as a reason for the declining number of high school graduates going to university. Older generations recognize its character as contrary to the former conception of Finland being morally and educationally superior and being a "land of a thousand lakes." This contrary state is thereby often associated with widespread disillusionment.
