Nyirokcsomó-duzzanat, commonly referred to as swollen lymph nodes, is a sign that the body's immune system is actively fighting off an infection or other illness. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands found throughout the body that filter harmful substances and contain immune cells. When the body encounters a pathogen, such as a virus or bacterium, these immune cells multiply within the lymph nodes, causing them to enlarge.

The most common causes of swollen lymph nodes are viral infections like the common cold or flu. Bacterial infections, such as strep throat or skin infections, can also lead to lymph node swelling. Less frequently, swollen lymph nodes can be a symptom of more serious conditions, including autoimmune diseases, certain cancers, or inflammatory disorders.

Swollen lymph nodes often feel tender or painful to the touch and may be accompanied by other symptoms depending on the underlying cause, such as fever, sore throat, or fatigue. The location of the swollen nodes can provide clues to the source of the problem; for instance, swollen nodes in the neck might indicate a throat infection, while those in the armpit could suggest an infection in the arm or breast.

In most cases, swollen lymph nodes resolve on their own as the underlying illness is treated or clears up. However, persistent, rapidly growing, or unusually hard lymph nodes warrant medical attention to rule out more serious causes. A doctor will typically perform a physical examination and may order further tests, such as blood work or imaging, to determine the cause and appropriate course of treatment.
