Nyáktermelés, also known as mucus production, is a fundamental biological process in animals, including humans. Mucus is a slippery, viscous substance secreted by mucous membranes, which line various cavities and passages of the body. These membranes are found in areas such as the respiratory tract, digestive tract, genitourinary tract, and the eyes. The primary function of mucus is lubrication and protection.

In the respiratory system, mucus traps inhaled particles like dust, pollen, and pathogens, preventing them from reaching the lungs. Cilia, tiny hair-like structures, then work to move this mucus upwards and out of the airways, a process called mucociliary clearance. In the digestive system, mucus lubricates food, facilitating its passage through the intestines, and also protects the delicate lining of the stomach and intestines from digestive acids and enzymes.

The composition of mucus varies depending on its location and function. Generally, it is composed of water, electrolytes, mucins (glycoproteins), lipids, and antibodies. Changes in mucus production, such as an increase or decrease, or alterations in its consistency, can be indicative of various physiological states or diseases. For instance, an increase in mucus production is common during infections like the common cold or influenza, where it serves as a defense mechanism. Conversely, conditions like Sjögren's syndrome can lead to reduced mucus production, causing dryness in the eyes and mouth.
