Nurjahdus

Nurjahdus is a Finnish term that describes a sudden, involuntary jolt or twitch, often experienced as a person is falling asleep. It is also commonly known as a hypnic jerk or sleep start. This phenomenon is characterized by a brief, muscular contraction that can cause the person to feel as if they are falling, leading to a sudden awakening.

The exact cause of nurjahdus is not fully understood, but several theories exist. One common explanation suggests that as the body relaxes during sleep onset, the brain might misinterpret the muscle relaxation as a sign of falling. This triggers a reflex to "catch oneself," resulting in the jolt. Other theories propose that it could be related to stress, fatigue, caffeine intake, or even irregular sleep patterns.

Nurjahdukset are a normal physiological occurrence and are generally harmless. While they can be startling and occasionally disruptive to sleep, they do not typically indicate any underlying medical condition.
