In the Western tradition, the development of neumes in the Middle Ages marked a significant step towards a more standardized system. These early symbols indicated melodic contours but lacked precise pitch and rhythm. Over time, the addition of lines and spaces, known as the staff, allowed for more accurate pitch representation. Guido of Arezzo is a key figure in this development, often credited with popularizing the musical staff and solfège.

By the Renaissance and Baroque periods, musical notation had become much more sophisticated, incorporating detailed instructions for rhythm, dynamics, and articulation. This allowed composers to express increasingly complex musical ideas. The Baroque era, in particular, saw the rise of a highly developed system that forms the basis of much of the musical notation used today.

For instance, some East Asian musical traditions utilize character-based notations or tablatures that indicate finger positions rather than specific pitches.
