Nunavik

Nunavik is the northernmost region of Quebec, Canada. It is an Inuit homeland located within the Nord-du-Québec administrative region, spanning the northern portion of the province along Ungava Bay and the Hudson Strait. The region covers a vast area with a small, predominantly Inuit population, estimated at about 12,000 people.

Nunavik comprises 14 Inuit communities, including Kuujjuaq, Inukjuak, Puvirnituq, and Salluit; Kuujjuaq serves as the region's administrative and service hub. Communities are connected mainly by air and, in winter, by seasonal ice roads; there are few year-round roads.

Governance and services: Nunavik falls under the Kativik Regional Government (KRG), established by the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement to provide regional services and land management on behalf of the 14 communities. The Kativik School Division administers public education across Nunavik, and Makivik Corporation represents Inuit interests. The region is part of Quebec's Nord-du-Québec administrative region.

Economy and culture: Economic activity combines traditional subsistence hunting and fishing with modern sectors such as mining and hydroelectric development. The James Bay Project has influenced the region's development. Inuktitut is widely spoken alongside French and English, and Inuit cultural traditions, art, and music remain central to community life.

Geography and climate: Nunavik lies in a subarctic to polar climate zone, with tundra landscapes in the coastal areas and permafrost inland. Winters are long and cold, summers are brief. Wildlife includes caribou, seals, and various migratory birds, and the landscape features fjords, coastlines, and islands along Ungava Bay and Hudson Strait.
