Nucleararmed

Nucleararmed is a term used to describe a state or non-state actor that possesses one or more nuclear weapons and has the capability to deploy them. In international relations, being nucleararmed carries implications for deterrence, security policy, alliance commitments, and participation in arms control discussions.

The basic concept rests on two elements: possession of nuclear devices and the ability to deliver them (through delivery systems such as intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched missiles, or strategic bombers) as well as the command-and-control infrastructure to authorize their use. Nuclear-armed status shapes strategic stability, potential fallout in crisis scenarios, and regional or global security dynamics.

Historically, the first nuclear-armed states emerged in the mid-20th century. The United States, followed by the Soviet Union (now Russia), developed and deployed nuclear weapons, with several other states joining over time. The five states widely recognized under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT as nuclear-weapon states) are the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China. Other states are believed or claimed to possess nuclear weapons, including India, Pakistan, and Israel (which maintains a policy of ambiguity about its arsenal). North Korea conducted nuclear tests and has declared or is widely regarded as possessing a nuclear deterrent, despite its non-NPT status.

Legal frameworks and diplomacy seek to prevent further proliferation and to reduce or eliminate existing arsenals. The NPT distinguishes nuclear-armed states from non-nuclear-armed states, while verification, safeguards, and regional arms-control initiatives, such as bilateral treaties, aim to manage risk and promote transparency. Debates continue over deterrence doctrine, modernization of arsenals, and prospects for disarmament and nonproliferation.
