Novelist is a writer who produces long works of fiction, usually in prose, intended to be published as a book. The term derives from Italian novella, meaning “new thing,” and in English came to designate a longer fictional narrative. A novelist creates characters, plots, settings, and themes through narrative technique such as point of view, structure, and voice. Their work may be standalone or part of a series, and may explore social, psychological, historical, or speculative topics. The craft involves planning, drafting, revising, and editing; many writers rely on research for authenticity, world-building, and cultural context. Novels are often intended to entertain, illuminate, critique, or provoke thought, and can span genres from literary realism to mystery, romance, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, and contemporary fiction.

Publication paths vary: many novelists work with agents or publishers, though self-publishing and digital platforms have broadened routes to readers. The profession is not limited to any one nationality or tradition; notable authors are associated with particular movements and have received recognition through prizes such as the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Booker Prize, and other national awards. The novelist's role has evolved with changes in media and readership, but the core function remains: to tell long-form narratives about characters and conflicts that resonate with readers and reflect or challenge the society in which they are written.
