Notfallsanitäter are highly trained medical professionals in Germany responsible for providing emergency medical care in pre-hospital settings. They are the highest-ranking non-physician emergency medical personnel and have a broader scope of practice than their predecessors, Rettungssanitäter. The Notfallsanitäter training is a three-year vocational program that equips them with advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, and life-saving skills.

Their duties include assessing patients' medical conditions, administering medications, performing advanced airway management, initiating intravenous access, and conducting basic life support and advanced life support procedures. Notfallsanitäter are authorized to make independent medical decisions within their defined scope of practice, especially when a physician is not immediately available. They work as part of an emergency medical team, often alongside physicians or Rettungssanitäter, and are crucial in stabilizing patients and ensuring their safe transport to a hospital. Their role is vital to the German emergency medical services system, providing critical care during medical emergencies and contributing to improved patient outcomes.
