NorðurMúlasýsla

NorðurMúlasýsla is a historical county located in northeastern Iceland. Historically, it was one of the thirteen traditional syslur (counties) of Iceland. The region encompasses a significant portion of the East Iceland coast, known for its dramatic fjords, rugged mountains, and sparsely populated valleys. Its administrative center and largest town was once Egilsstaðir, although Egilsstaðir itself is a relatively modern settlement that has grown considerably in recent decades.

The landscape of NorðurMúlasýsla is characterized by its remoteness and natural beauty. Fjords like Seyðisfjörður and Borgarfjörður are notable features, offering sheltered harbors and picturesque villages. The interior is dominated by highlands and glacial rivers. Historically, the economy of the area relied heavily on fishing, sheep farming, and to a lesser extent, small-scale industry.

In modern times, with the administrative reforms in Iceland, the traditional syslur have been largely replaced by larger counties or regions. NorðurMúlasýsla, as a distinct administrative entity, is no longer in use. However, the geographical area it encompassed remains a recognizable and significant part of East Iceland, retaining its historical identity and cultural heritage. Tourism has become an increasingly important economic factor, drawing visitors to its natural wonders and tranquil atmosphere.
