Normalspenninger

Normalspenninger, known in English as normal stresses, are the stresses that act perpendicular to a plane within a material. They form part of the Cauchy stress tensor and are commonly denoted by sigma_xx, sigma_yy, and sigma_zz in an orthogonal coordinate system. Normalspenninger arise from axial loading, thermal effects, residual stresses, and complex multi-axial states of stress. For a simple uniaxial member loaded by a force F over a cross-sectional area A, the normal stress is sigma = F/A, with tensile stresses typically taken as positive and compressive stresses as negative, depending on convention.

In general, a material volume experiences a set of normal stresses on any plane, in addition to shear stresses. On principal planes, shear stresses vanish and the normal stresses take the principal values sigma1, sigma2, sigma3, ordered from largest to smallest. The relationship between normal and shear stresses on any plane is described by Mohr’s circle, which provides a graphical method to relate the two on different orientations.

Measurement and computation of normalspenninger employ strain gauges, X-ray or neutron diffraction, photoelasticity, and finite-element analysis. Normal stresses are central to design criteria, yielding and failure theories, and safety factors. They must be considered alongside shear stresses to understand the complete stress state in a component.
