Picture naming tasks present participants with pictures of objects and ask them to name them aloud. Word reading tasks present participants with written words and ask them to read them aloud. Nonword reading tasks present participants with nonwords (strings of letters that do not form a real word) and ask participants to read them aloud.

Speed naming tasks are often used in clinical settings to assess cognitive function in individuals with neurological or psychiatric disorders. For example, individuals with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia may exhibit slower naming times and increased errors on speed naming tasks. For example, studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown that speed naming tasks activate a network of brain regions, including the left inferior frontal gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, and left angular gyrus. These findings suggest that speed naming tasks engage multiple cognitive processes, including semantic processing, phonological processing, and attention.
