Nondismissive

Nondismissive is an adjective describing an attitude or behavior that does not dismiss or trivialize another person's concerns, ideas, or experiences. It implies listening, acknowledgment, and respect, even when there is disagreement.

The term is a modern coinage formed from the prefix non- plus dismissive. It is used primarily in discussions of communication and interpersonal skills and has become more common in professional writing and social commentary in the 21st century.

In practice, nondismissive responses signal psychological safety and openness. They involve acknowledging what a person has said, asking clarifying questions, and avoiding premature judgments. A nondismissive stance does not require agreement; it means the speaker's input is given fair consideration rather than being dismissed out of hand.

It differs from open-mindedness in emphasis: nondismissive focuses on how input is received, while open-mindedness emphasizes a willingness to change views. It is related to nonjudgmental and validating communication, but is not identical to them.
