Nivojen

Nivojen is the Finnish genitive plural form of nivel, the term for a joint in anatomy. In medical and educational Finnish, nivojen is used to express relationships involving joints, for example in phrases like nivelien liikkuvuus meaning the range of motion of the joints. Joints are the connections where two or more bones meet and enable movement or stability. They typically consist of articular cartilage, a joint capsule, synovial membrane and fluid, ligaments, and sometimes sacs such as bursae, as well as surrounding muscles and tendons.

Joints are classified by function and structure. By function, they can be immovable (fibrous joints), slightly movable (cartilaginous joints), or freely movable (synovial joints). By structure, most common in humans are synovial joints, which feature a fluid-filled cavity that reduces friction and allows diverse movements—hinge, pivot, ball-and-socket, saddle, condyloid, and plane types.
