The nitronium ion is a positively charged polyatomic ion with the chemical formula NO₂⁺. It plays a significant role in inorganic and organic chemistry, particularly in nitration reactions. The ion consists of a nitrogen atom double-bonded to two oxygen atoms, giving it a linear molecular geometry with a central nitrogen atom carrying a formal positive charge.

The nitronium ion is highly reactive due to its strong electrophilic nature, meaning it seeks electron-rich substrates to stabilize itself. It is commonly generated in situ during nitration processes, often using a mixture of concentrated nitric acid (HNO₃) and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄). The sulfuric acid acts as a catalyst, protonating nitric acid to form the nitronium ion:

This reaction is fundamental in industrial processes such as the production of nitrobenzene, an essential precursor to dyes, pharmaceuticals, and explosives like TNT.
