Nitroglicerinnal

Nitroglicerinnal, also written as nitroglycerin or glyceryl trinitrate, is a chemical compound with the formula C3H5N3O9. It is a volatile, oily liquid at room temperature that is highly sensitive to heat, shock, and friction and can detonate when subjected to strong stimuli. Because of its instability, it is handled under strict safety controls and stored in suitable containers.

It is produced by the nitration of glycerol using a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids. The substance has historically been used as an ingredient in explosives; when stabilized with inert materials it forms dynamite, a widely used industrial explosive.

It is also used medically as a nitrate to treat cardiovascular conditions. In medicine it is known as glyceryl trinitrate and is used to relieve and prevent angina pectoris by dilating blood vessels, reducing cardiac work. It is available in sublingual tablets, sprays, ointments, and transdermal patches. Common effects include headaches and hypotension. It should not be used with phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors due to potential dangerous blood pressure drops.

Regulation reflects its dual potential hazards as an explosive and a medicinal product. Handling, storage, transport, and licensing are subject to safety and regulatory controls in most countries.
