In practice, pipelines or containers are filled with nitrogen, often with monitoring of oxygen or humidity levels to ensure the atmosphere meets specification. Techniques include headspace purging, full-volume purge, blanketing, and vacuum-assisted purging before introducing nitrogen.

Applications span several industries. In chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, nitrogen purge protects reactive reagents and finished products during synthesis, transfer, and storage. In electronics and optics, it prevents corrosion and moisture damage. In food and beverage packaging, nitrogen flushing extends shelf life by reducing oxidation and preserving flavor. Laboratories use nitrogen-purged environments for sample handling, gas chromatography, and storage of moisture- and oxygen-sensitive materials. Some processes also employ nitrogen to create inert atmospheres in gloveboxes, reactors, or storage vessels.

Benefits include reduced oxidation, moisture control, improved stability of sensitive compounds, and extended shelf life. Limitations involve incomplete removal of all oxygen, potential residual moisture, equipment costs, and the need for proper venting and monitoring.
