Nitrogenefficiency

Nitrogenefficiency, commonly referred to as nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE), describes how effectively a system converts available nitrogen into the desired output, such as biomass, grain yield, or tissue nitrogen. It is a central concept in agriculture, horticulture, and ecology, reflecting the balance between nitrogen supply and productive output.

In crops, NUE is often considered as the combination of uptake efficiency (NUpE) and utilization efficiency (NUtE). NUpE measures how well roots absorb nitrogen from soil or fertilizer, while NUtE reflects how efficiently absorbed nitrogen is converted into harvestable yield or grain protein. Total NUE is influenced by genetics, soil properties, climate, and management practices, and can be affected by crop developmental stage and nitrogen form.

Measurement and interpretation of NUE typically involve yield per unit of nitrogen input or the amount of plant nitrogen in relation to total nitrogen supply. Researchers may assess NUpE by comparing plant nitrogen content with and without nitrogen input, and NUtE by yield relative to the nitrogen contained in plant tissues.

Applications and management strategies aim to improve NUE to maintain or increase production while reducing environmental impact. Approaches include breeding for high NUpE and NUtE, precision fertilization, split applications, targeted placement, soil testing, and the use of slow-release formulations or nitrification inhibitors. Crop rotation and improved residue management can also enhance soil nitrogen dynamics. Reducing nitrogen losses benefits water quality and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

Context and challenges involve trade-offs among yield, grain quality, and nitrogen concentration, as well as environmental variability. Ongoing research focuses on genetics, plant–microbe interactions, and sensor-based management to sustain production while minimizing environmental footprint.
